Safeguarding the First Draft: How Milken Community School Uses Exam.net to Protect Student Voice in the Age of AI

Milken Community School is an independent Jewish school in Los Angeles, serving approximately 800 students in grades 6–12. As generative AI became increasingly present in classrooms, Tara Ann Carter, Director of Educational Technology, set out to find a way to safeguard authentic student writing at its earliest stage.

For Tara, the challenge was not about preventing cheating — it was about protecting the very first moment of student thinking, when ideas are still forming. With so many digital resources available outside the classroom, teachers needed a way to capture a genuine baseline of each student’s own knowledge and skills.

“We needed to ensure that the initial spark of an assignment was genuine. The challenge is capturing that first, raw draft where students are relying solely on their own knowledge and skills.”
